Before we can answer the question, “Why use hybrids?”, we must answer the question, “What are hybrids?”. Hybrid golf clubs are a cross between irons and woods. Hybrids enable golfers to hit long distances and get the ball airborne more easily. Hybrids have not only become a trend among recreational golfers but many touring pros are carrying them as well.
The reasons for using hybrids vary but one way to identify if a hybrid club would benefit you is to evaluate how well you hit your long irons. If a golfer is not very consistent or confident with his or her long irons, they are an ideal candidate for hybrids. Many golfers never use their 3 and 4 irons because they do not gain much distance over their 5 iron and their shots with the 3 and 4 iron are more likely to shank, slice or go out of bounds than fly 185 yards and land on the green. Still other golfers will continue to use these clubs for long approach shots even though the end results are more often than not disappointing.
Substituting hybrids for long irons enables golfers to hit more consistent shots from far away distances. Hybrids are more easy to hit than long irons and they are far more forgiving. Their design reduces missed hits and allows golfers to hit long straight shots that get airborne easily from a variety of lies.
For a recreational golfer with a handicap of 10 or more, replacing long irons with hybrids should reduce your scores by at least one stroke per iron replaced with a hybrid, per round. If you are a 12 handicap and you carry a 2, 3 and 4 iron, hybrids could be the difference that you need to break 80! With hybrids, a 20 handicap could break 90! Hybrids will enable you to execute shots from yardages of 170, 180, 190, and beyond.
Many women golfers prefer to not use the long irons at all. They choose not to carry 3 and 4 irons and, sometimes, they don't even keep a 5 iron in their bag. Often women replace these irons with 7, 9 and 11 woods that allow them to hit longer distances more effectively but are incredibly difficult to use from lies other than the fairway. Hybrids for women golfers are much more versatile than 7, 9 and 11 woods. Hybrids they are much easier to hit consistently than long irons.
Hybrid numbers directly correspond to the numbers on the irons that they replace. A 2 hybrid replaces the 2 iron, a 3 hybrid replaces the 3 iron, a 4 hybrid replaces the 4 iron, and so on.
It's a fact. Recreational golfers who replace their inconsistent long irons with easy-to-hit hybrids will hit more consistent shots from longer distances and reduce their score. |
